EVERY SECRET HAS A SIGNAL
Hugo Drax
Sir Hugo Drax, the villain of Moonraker, took his surname from Admiral Sir Reginald Aylmer Ranfurly Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax, an acquaintance of Fleming’s from his naval circles. The admiral’s actual character had nothing to do with the fictional Drax, a disfigured ex-Nazi plotting to fire a nuclear missile at London. Fleming simply liked the sound of an old aristocratic name and borrowed it wholesale.
Drax’s henchman, Krebs, carries a name with a darker echo. It matches Hans Krebs, Hitler’s last Chief of Staff, who died in the Berlin bunker in 1945. Fleming rarely picked names at random, and the pairing of a German villain with a henchman named after a real Nazi general fits the pattern.
