The enemy is a private businessman with protectors in London and Washington.","full_synopsis":"On a snowy night in January 1991, Jonathan Pine is on duty at the Hotel Meister Palace in Zurich. Pine is English, a former soldier, and the hotel's night manager. A late guest arrives with a large entourage: Richard Onslow Roper, a billionaire who trades in weapons and drugs. Pine already knows the name.\r\n\r\nSome time earlier Pine held the same job at the Queen Nefertiti hotel in Cairo. The owner, Freddie Hamid, did business with Roper. Hamid's mistress, Sophie, gave Pine papers that documented those deals and asked him to pass them to the Egyptian authorities. She warned him that Roper had friends inside British intelligence. Pine ignored the warning and gave copies to a contact in MI6. The leak reached Roper's side, and Sophie was murdered. Pine has blamed himself ever since.\r\n\r\nLeonard Burr, a former intelligence officer, and Rex Goodhew, a senior civil servant, approach Pine in Switzerland. They are building a sting against Roper with a small group of American allies. The operation is called Limpet. Pine agrees to go in. Burr gives him a criminal past to live out, first on the cliffs of west Cornwall, where he uses the name Jack Linden, and then in northern Quebec. Pine ends up working in a restaurant in the Bahamas that Roper's party visits. Burr's people stage a kidnapping of Roper's young son, Daniel. Pine stops it and takes a real beating to make it convincing. Roper brings him home to his private island to recover.\r\n\r\nRoper is preparing his largest deal: military-grade weapons and training for a Colombian drug cartel, paid for with a large shipment of cocaine. The cartel's lawyer, Dr Paul Apostoll, secretly informs for Limpet. Pine does not know this. Apostoll persuades Roper that his usual front man, Major Corkoran, has become a liability, and Roper puts Pine's name on the paperwork. Corkoran is sure Pine is a plant but cannot prove it. Pine gathers what intelligence he can. He also falls in love with Jed, Roper's English mistress.\r\n\r\nThe operation is undone from London and Washington. Factions inside British intelligence and the CIA profit from Roper's trade, and they run a rival operation, Flagship, to protect him. They lean on Goodhew until he steps back. They expose Apostoll to the cartel. Apostoll is tortured, gives up Pine's name, and is killed. Roper has Pine seized and tortured aboard his yacht, the Iron Pasha.\r\n\r\nBurr has no legal means left, so he lies. He tells Sir Anthony Joyston Bradshaw, one of Roper's English associates, that he holds enough evidence to convict Roper and everyone around him, and offers to let Roper go if Pine and Jed are freed unharmed. Roper believes it and releases them. Roper stays free.
